About Pita Bread

Pita bread is a leavened flatbread that is popular in many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. It is typically made from wheat flour, water, and yeast, and it is often used for making sandwiches and pita wraps.

Healthier Than The Store Bought Brands

Pita chips are a tasty snack, but there is some debate over whether they are healthy. Store-bought pita chips are often flavored with too much salt and fat, which can add unnecessary calories. Our recipe is baked instead of fried, making them a healthier option. We didn’t have whole wheat flour pita bread on hand but using this option will make these chips even more nutritious.

Why We Love This Recipe

Chips of any kind are always better when they’re homemade! With only a few ingredients, these tasty treats take less than 30 minutes from start to finish. The best part is that it’s easy to make and can be easily adapted to whatever seasonings you have on hand. Plus they’re a great way to use up leftover pita bread.

Can I use gluten-free pita bread?

While traditional pita bread contains gluten, there are now many gluten-free varieties available on the market. These types of pita bread are made from gluten-free flours, such as rice flour or quinoa flour. They are often marketed as being healthier than traditional pita bread, as they are free from the protein that can cause gastrointestinal issues in some people. Whether you are looking for a healthier option or you need to avoid gluten for dietary reasons, gluten-free pita bread is a great alternative to the traditional variety.

Ingredients Needed

Pita Bread – Store-bought our homemade pita bread. We used store-bought pita bread. You can opt for gluten-free or whole wheat pita bread.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – We love the flavor that olive oil adds to these chips so while you can use other oils such as avocado or canola oil, the flavor just won’t be the same.

Dried Herbs & Spices – We used flaky sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder and Italian seasoning in this recipe. Be creative and use what you have on hand! Try using sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion powder, cayenne pepper, za’atar or even fresh herbs.

How To Make Baked Pita Chips

Making your own pita chips is a lot easier than you might think! With just a few simple steps you’ll be enjoying crispy chips in no time.

Slice the pita bread: We like thicker chips so we keep the pita bread whole. If you prefer thinner chips then you can separate each pita into two pieces with a serrated knife. Using a pizza cutter, sharp knife or kitchen shears cut each round into 8 pita wedges.

Season the pita bread: Place pita triangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a single layer. Brush each piece (front and back) with olive oil or use an olive oil cooking spray. Then season with salt, pepper, garlic pepper and Italian seasoning.

Bake the chips: Place sheet pan in preheated 400 degrees F oven. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown, flipping them halfway through. Allow to cool completely before serving.

Suggested Pita Chip Variations

1. Cinnamon & Sugar

For a sweet and spicy pita chip, try cinnamon and sugar. This combination is delicious and unexpected, and it’s sure to be a hit with your guests.

2. Parmesan Cheese and Basil

Parmesan and basil is another popular seasoning combination for pita chips. The Parmesan provides a nutty flavor, while the basil adds a touch of sweetness.

3. Rosemary and Olive Oil

The rosemary provides an aromatic woodsy flavor, while the olive oil adds a touch of richness.

4. Chocolate & Cayenne Pepper

If you’re feeling adventurous, try chocolate and cayenne on your pita chips. The chocolate will add sweetness, while the cayenne will give them a bit of heat.

What To Serve With Pita Chips

1. You can pair pita chips with homemade hummus, guacamole, or salsa.

2. They’re a great option for dipping into soup or chili.

3. You can also top pita chips with cheese, meats, or vegetables.

4. Pair them with dips such as our smoked trout dip and whipped feta dip.

5. Use them as a base for bruschetta or Caprese salad.

6. Crumble them on top of a fresh salad

How To Store Baked Pita Chips

Even the most delicious pita chips will quickly lose their flavor if they are not stored properly. Be sure to let the chips cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. If the chips are still warm, condensation can form and make them soggy.

Store the chips in a dark, cool place. Sunlight and heat will cause the chips to become stale more quickly. If you want your chips to stay extra crispy, you can store them in the freezer. Just be sure to seal them tightly in a freezer-safe bag or container to prevent freezer burn.

Give these baked crispy pita chips a try the next time you’re in the mood for a healthy snack. You’ll be surprised at how easy they are to make, and you can feel good about eating them knowing you chose these over the store-bought chips.
